Get On Your Bikes and Ride!, Part 2

Our last blog post was on motorcycle safety, so we thought it would follow nicely to talk a bit about bicycling. Even more so because May is National Bike Month. There are so many reasons why regular bike rides, alone or with others, are great. Here are just a few:

Environmentally Friendly

Seeing as we recently celebrated Earth Day, it should be stressed that riding a bike to work or to school, or while running errands ??? if that???s a reasonable option for you – is one of the most environmentally friendly things you can do. You won???t be burning fuel, but you will also save money.

So???score.

Physical and Mental Health

But it isn???t just healthy for the planet. Bicycling is one of the best cardiovascular activities one can do, if you aren???t a swimmer. And assuming the motorists in your neighborhood are co-operating with you, a leisurely evening bike ride can be among the best ways to unpack the stresses of the day.

Family Togetherness

Who doesn???t love to see a family out together on their bikes enjoying the outdoors and enjoying time together? Maybe it reminds you of similar outings you had with your family when you were a kid. It???s one of those things they say ???you can???t get back??? so why not make these memories while doing something good for your health, and that of your family?

Getting Out and Seeing the Sights

Have you noticed that when you are out on a walk or a bike ride through your neighborhood you notice things that you never see when you are driving by the same place in your car?

  • Houses with interesting shutters or siding.
  • Beautiful vibrant flowers in the garden.
  • Perhaps a garden gnome who appears to be up to no good.

If you didn???t before, you probably will now. You???re welcome.

Bike check???testing???one, two???

Just like with the first motorcycle ride of the season – and with any endeavor really – you have to prepare before you go biking. These are things you should quickly check before every ride:

  • Tire pressure ??? If you have a slow leak you might not notice a difference until it causes a problem. Check the pressure regularly. You can get a reliable bicycle tire gauge for just a few dollars.
  • Check the wheels and brakes ??? If there ever is a problem with them, it is something you want to know about before you get rolling along at a good clip, so give them a quick test before leaving your yard, or before you walk your bike onto the bike path.
  • Reflectors ??? Make sure they are securely mounted and facing the right way to effectively announce your presence if you are planning on being out after dusk.

Rent a bike or borrow one from a friend if need be, but once you???ve gotten into the habit of an evening bike ride, you may find it???s about time to buy one.

Buy a used one. It doesn???t matter, as long as the bike is safe, dependable, and has two wheels that meet the pavement and take you where you want to go.

Enjoy!
